‘That Half-Past Twelve Solar Flare’
Studies In Entropy (2025)
This series of mixed-media digital art was inspired by the Second Law of Thermodynamics - the idea that entropy (disorder) within the universe increases with time; shaping everything from the smallest particle to the largest galaxies.
My first encounter with the idea was not in a classroom - I learnt about it through one of Muse’s albums called The 2nd Law (2012). I wanted to explore how beauty in nature and space eventually decays, despite our human desire (or folly) to believe that order and structure might hedge us against the finality of time and space.
This work in particular was shaped by David Lynch’s films and philosophy. I created this series when I heard that he sadly passed away. During that time, I reflected on what his work taught me over the years: despite the deafening noise of human-made chaos, there is always beauty and simplicity in the world, if you sit still enough to feel it.
